Way back in September we spent the month focusing on kindness. It's a good way to start out the school year with preschoolers. Be kind to your friends (don't hit, don't push, take turns, share). Be kind to your teachers and parents (obey, help). Be kind to yourself (play safely, eat the healthy food first, follow the rules). Be kind to things (put them back where they belong, use toys as they're meant to be used). You know. Stuff like that.
We also involved the parents. The children were given construction paper hearts to take home. On the hearts the parents recorded the kind acts of their children and sent the hearts back to school, where the teachers read the statements during circle time -- after which the children took their hearts to the hallway and placed them all together.
As the month went on, the number of hearts grew...
and grew...
and grew...
until the big heart was full of little hearts and until the little children were full of the big idea that being kind can make a difference.
